How to get the Same Internet Speed on both Windows and Linux Machine
Hello Guys..!!
Hope you are doing well
Today we are going to see about how to get same internet speed on both Windows (host machine) and Linux (VMware) Operating Systems.
Though my Internet speed is around 50+Mbps on my host machine (Windows), but still I used to get very less speed on my Linux machine on VMware somewhere around 500 to 1000 Kbps.
So, I researched a lot on the internet and followed various articles and youtube videos to increase or get the same internet speed on my Linux machine just like the speed I get on my host machine (Windows).
Even after following various articles, my internet speed on my Linux machine hasn’t been increased until I found a way which will work like a magic for 100%.
Let’s Jump into the Subject!
Firstly, I have changed my DNS servers to Google Public DNS on my host machine (Windows 11) by following the below article.
Follow the below steps to change the DNS servers to Google Public DNS.
Step-1
Open “Control Panel” and Click on “Network and Internet” option
Step-2
Now Click on “Network and Sharing Center”
Step-3
Now Click on the “Change adapter settings” option
Step-4
Now Select your Ethernet and Right Click on it and Choose the Properties option to open Ethernet Properties as shown below.
Now Choose IPv4 and Click on the Properties option as shown in the above picture.
Google DNS:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
Now Update the DNS servers with Google Public DNS as shown above and Click Ok to Update the new DNS servers
Now open VMware and start your Linux machine from it
Open the Terminal and enter the below command to see the source list
cat /etc/apt/sources.list
By default, there will be an HTTP protocol in it.
Update it from “http” to “https” following the below commands.
sudo mousepad /etc/apt/sources.list
or
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
Now Install speedtest command line interface using the below command.
sudo apt-get install speedtest-cli
Now Click on the Computer symbol in the bottom right of your Linux Machine and choose the “Settings” option to open Virtual Machine Settings
Change the Network adapter option to “Bridged” Connection and Click Ok
Now Click on the “Edit” option which will be in the top left of your VMware workstation and Choose the option “Virtual Network Editor” to open it.
In the next screen, click on the “Change settings” option
This is the last and most important step, so please don’t mess with this settings.
In the Bridged section, open the drop-down list and select the ethernet or LAN that you are using on your host system (Windwows) and click on Apply option to save the changes.
In my case the ethernet or LAN i am using is “Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller”.
That’s it
Now we will get the same internet speed (Download Speed) on both Linux and windows machine (host machine)
Let’s test the Internet download speed on the Linux Terminal using the Speed test Command Line Interface tool which we installed at the beginning of this article.
Just type “speedtest” in the terminal to start testing the internet download and upload speed as shown below.
This is how we can get the same internet speed on both the host machine (windows 11) and the Linux machine (VMware).
For a Practical demonstration please watch my below video to understand the process more clearly 👇
So, That’s it for today.
